Long before anyone gave it a modern name, men were proving their devotion through what they were willing to sacrifice.

For centuries, men crossed oceans, fought battles, built fortunes and composed poetry with a woman somewhere at the centre of their ambition. Queens were presented with jewels and treasures. Noblewomen were courted with gifts and grand gestures. Suitors competed not simply for attention, but for the privilege of being considered worthy of it.

A man who desired an exceptional woman was expected to demonstrate his intentions.

Words alone were cheap.

He brought flowers from his garden, commissioned jewellery, offered land, wrote letters by candlelight and travelled extraordinary distances just for the possibility of seeing her. Sometimes he waited months for a reply. Sometimes years for her favour.

The greater his admiration, the greater the effort expected of him.

History remembers kings, warriors, merchants and explorers, but behind many powerful men was another story: the woman whose approval mattered enough to make him strive harder.

Even medieval courtly love romanticised this idea. The admired lady was elevated, while her admirer proved himself through loyalty, patience, courage and service. She did not need to pursue him. His actions were supposed to demonstrate his worth.

And perhaps that instinct never disappeared.

The castles became penthouses.
The handwritten letters became messages.
The treasure chests became beautifully wrapped boxes.
The horse waiting outside became a chauffeur-driven car.

But the language of devotion remains remarkably familiar.

Effort. Sacrifice. Service. Provision.

There will always be men who find genuine satisfaction in making life easier, softer and more luxurious for the woman they admire.

Not because she is incapable of providing for herself.

Quite the opposite.

There is something particularly compelling about a woman who needs nothing from a man, yet inspires him to offer something anyway.

She becomes the standard he wants to rise to.

And the modern man who understands that isn’t inventing something new.

He is simply participating in a ritual as old as civilisation itself:

Admire her. Court her. Provide for her. Serve her well.
