Peek into my World
There are lessons that become part of you before you even understand what shaped them. Lessons that slip under your skin in childhood and sit there quietly, waiting for you to grow old enough to notice their weight...
My early life taught me fear long before it taught me freedom or love. I grew up in a house where the air felt tight and unpredictable. Where a child learned to move with precision and silence... Where emotions were something to hide and perfection was the closest thing to protection. I learned to scan a room before I walked into it. I learned to predict someone’s mood from the sound of their footsteps or their breath. I learned that the safest child is the smallest one. The quietest one. The one who blends. That was not childhood.
That was survival.
Then there were the moments with people who should have kept me safe... People who hid behind the facade of holiness... People who saw my innocence as an opportunity rather than something to protect. People who placed confusion where trust should have been. Those early wounds taught me something sharp. They taught me that danger does not always roar. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it smiles. Sometimes it looks familiar until it isn’t. I learned to distrust comfort. I learned to listen to the spaces between words.
And then there was the night outside, where everything went wrong so fast I barely had time to understand it. I did not have the chance to run. Pain found me before my instinct had the chance to. My world became fists and boots and concrete and panic. The kind of terror that fractures time into sharp little pieces. Someone’s headlights broke through the dark eventually. Someone’s presence cut through the violence long enough to pull me out of it. Survival felt fragile that night. Close. Too close.
Unfortunately... one of many.
Later came a man I let into my heart...The kind of lesson no one deserves. Loving him meant becoming familiar with chaos again. Loving him meant watching alcohol change someone’s face. Change their intentions. Change their ability to choose anything except destruction. The night he almost killed me is a night my body still remembers even when I don’t speak it aloud. The night he broke into my new place of refuge when I was alone was another kind of nightmare... The kind that teaches you how thin the walls of safety really are. How rage and obsession can manifest into something dangerous... That even when I think I can finally breathe, I still have to be vigilant.
Those years taught me resilience, but they also stripped pieces from me. I rebuilt myself slowly after that. Carefully. Quietly. Like someone gluing together a broken vase in the dark. There were parts of me I wasn’t sure would grow back. Parts of me I guarded so tightly that no one could get close enough to see whether they were still alive.
But they were. They are. I am.
I have been rebuilding for years. And blooming, even when I didn’t realize it was happening. Every time I chose myself. Every time I walked away from danger. Every time I trusted someone new, even a little. Every time I spoke a truth I used to swallow. Every time I let someone see me without flinching.
I forged strong armor over time. Not to push people out, but to give myself a way to breathe in a world that had taught me to brace for impact over and over again. When I push someone away, it is not rejection. It is instinct. It is the guardian inside me saying slow down, be careful, this heart has been through hell and is still healing. But the deeper truth is this. Once I let someone in, they are in. Not lightly. Not casually. Fully.
I want a connection that doesn’t retreat when I pull back. Someone who leans in instead of stepping away. Someone who understands that when I push, that is the moment I need to be held the closest. Someone who sees past the practiced strength to the woman who fought like hell to become who she is now.
My past taught me vigilance. It taught me discernment. It taught me grit. But I am learning something new now. I am learning softness. I am learning openness. I am learning the life that exists beyond survival. A life where I get to evolve into something fuller. Stronger. Wilder. Kinder to myself. A new version of me that is not defined by what happened, but by what I choose to grow into.
I am my own next evolution.
And I am finally learning how to live. 🖤
